Deuel County Pasture Walk - Thoughts and Photos
A Pasture Walk was held in Deuel County on July 14, 2009. Topics included watering and fencing systems, rotational grazing, patch-burn grazing and prescribed fire. We began our afternoon at the 4H Service Center in Clear Lake, SD, with Judge Jessop, South Dakota Grassland Coalition Project Leader, discussing options for watering systems and fencing. We then headed out to our first location, the Tekrony Pasture, where Dr. Alexander "Sandy" Smart, SDSU Range Science Professor, discussed plant identification and knowing what plant species are desirable and which ones are not. Dr. Smart also discussed grazing pressure and how that can affect your pastures. Next we stopped at the Dailey Ranch to listen to Pete Bauman, The Nature Conservancy, talk about the patch-burn grazing project at the Dailey Ranch. Finally we made our way to the Krause pasture to look at what prescribed fire was doing for them. At the Krause pasture, Dr. Sandy Smart talked about how prescribed fire worked and Dr. Eric Mousel, SDSU Range and Livestock Production Specialist, discussed rotational grazing. Rebecca Schafer, Deuel County Extension Livestock Educator, gave some brief comments on multi-species grazing and the research she is currently conducting in Grant County involving meat goats and beef cattle. Kyle Schell, Range Management Outreach Coordinator, briefly mentioned the grazing study he is currently conducting on "Restoring Native Tallgrass Prairie and Improving Profitability on Eastern South Dakota Grasslands with Intensive Early Stocking" at the Krause Ranch. We ended the day at the Tekrony Ranch for burgers served by the Coteau Hills Cattlemen. A special thanks goes to all that participated and those that assisted with the pasture walk. Here are a few photos from the tour.
